Why Sarah Huo Chose HVA
Seventh-grader Sarah Huo’s days are filled with laughter, learning, and a deep sense of belonging at Highline Virtual Academy (HVA). In a recent interview, Sarah shared her experiences and aspirations, providing a glimpse into her life as a virtual student.
In fifth grade, Sarah asked her teacher about middle school options and her teacher suggested HVA. She applied and hasn't looked back since.
"Since my first day at HVA as a 6th grader, I’ve had so much fun," Sarah recalls. “I think it was even more fun than elementary school.”
HVA stood out for Sarah, not just as a virtual school but also for its vibrant culture. She appreciates the kindness of her classmates and the accessibility and support of her teachers.
“My school is unique in lots of ways aside from the fact that we’re virtual. We’re also really independent Ravens,” she shared, referencing the school mascot. The Raven was selected by the Student Leadership team and is meant to represent individuality, community and relationships, learning and spirit.
A Typical Day at HVA
HVA offers both synchronous and asynchronous learning tracks. Sarah chose the synchronous route, where she attends live classes on Zoom with teachers.
All of HVA's learning models include check-ins to ensure student success. Daily group advisories allow students like Sarah to connect with peers and teachers. Weekly 1:1 check-ins and monthly progress conferences with advisors help students stay on track and reflect on their learning journey.
For Sarah, a typical day begins with powering up her computer, attending classes, and enjoying any extra time to chat and play with friends.
Creating Connection
Considering a virtual school may seem like you’d risk being disconnected from your classmates and community, but Sarah’s experience has been anything but.
“It seemed really easy to connect with students. I had a few friends from elementary school who applied, and I’ve gotten to know them a lot better. I find friends really easily at HVA because they’re all so kind.”
Despite the virtual setup, Sarah embraces in-person opportunities. Events like 'Strong Start' at the start of each quarter are opportunities for her to connect in person with classmates and teachers. HVA also has in-person opportunities every Friday.
"I’ll go in person whenever I can," she asserts, showcasing her enthusiasm for every aspect of her school life.
Sarah's journey at Highline Virtual Academy is more than just about classes and learning; it's about being part of a supportive community and preparing for her future.
“In the future, I want to be a teacher,” she shared. “When I was a little kid, I would play with my little sister and grandpa. I would pretend I was a teacher and I would play a game and would pretend to teach them. Teachers are so kind, helpful and supportive.”
Choosing HVA was a decision that marked a new chapter in Sarah's school journey, one filled with independence, connection and personal growth. Her days at HVA are full of the warmth of friendships and the guidance of supportive teachers. The flexibility of synchronous learning and the regular check-ins have not only kept her on track but also deepened her connection with the school community.
